NANCY CARRASCO

Dr. Nancy Carrasco is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She earned her M.D. and a Master's degree in Biochemistry from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed her postdoctoral training at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in New Jersey. Before joining Vanderbilt, she held faculty positions at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Carrasco is widely known for her research on the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS), a key protein for the active transport of iodide in the thyroid gland, lactating breast, and other tissues. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2015, the National Academy of Medicine in 2020, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022.
