Peter Kopp is a Professor of Medicine (Professeur agrégé) in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. From 10/2018 to 8/2024 he has served as Médecin Chef. Since his retirement from his clinical and administrative roles in August 2024, he is focusing his activities on research and educational roles. Dr. Kopp obtained his MD degree and his training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Berne, Switzerland. In 1993, he moved to Northwestern University in Chicago for a research fellowship. He then joined the faculty and rose through the ranks to full professor. At Northwestern, he has served as director of the Center for Genetic Medicine (CGM) from 2007 to 2014. In 2018, he has moved back to Switzerland to his current institution. Dr. Kopp has extensive clinical experience in clinical endocrinology with a focus on thyroid dysfunction and thyroid cancer. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Thyroid from 2013 to 2019, an appointment that reflects his recognized expertise in clinical and basic thyroidology. He has been a member of the thyroid cancer guideline panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network from 2002 to 2019. Dr. Kopp is an author or co-author of more than 235 publications, including chapters in major textbooks such as Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. He serves as a co-editor of Werner and Ingbar's textbook The Thyroid, the editor of Thyroid Disease Manager, and as section editor of William's Textbook of Endocrinology. Dr. Kopp served as the President of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) for the term 10/2021 to 10/2022, and he currently is the President of the Swiss Society for Endocrinology and Diabetology (2022-2025).
